Sunday mountain bike ride at beautiful Winona Lake
Sunday's mountain bike ride was a great trip. With everyone in the group having mountain bikes already we decided to go somewhere new and after great debate we decided to head to Warsaw, IN to Winona Lake. We had heard many great things about the mountain biking there but what we were most impressed with after riding the awesome trails was the beautiful community and friendly people we met. One of the best Sunday road trips ever.
The trail system itself is built on an old Boys Club grounds. It is now private property and the trail system is well maintained if you stay on the trail, but if you're like me you'll fall into a giant patch of thorn bushes and have to slowly extract yourself out of the mess!
The Village at Winona itself has an amazing history, and has been restored into a beautiful small lakeside community with shops, artists, great restaurants, and even a bike shop called Trailhouse that has rentals (singlespeeds too, I know you all want to try a singlespeed with me) and some great owners we had the chance to meet.
The locals were all very nice, and one of them led us through the maze of trails. He is involved with the local cycling group there called KCV Cycling, and they do multiple fundraisers and special events at the trails and with the village.
The city of Warsaw itself seemed very nice too, and there are multiple interesting places to eat. We chose Mad Anthony Brewing Company, where they had an endless menu of unique choices and great locally brewed beer on tap.
All in all, this is a great place to go whether for mountain biking or just to spend the day. We will definitely be going back! Doesn't hurt that everyone we met was named Rob... Both the local that showed us around and the owner of the bike shop... How much better can it get than that!

Your support does matter!!!
The U.S. Senate affirmed its time-tested support of bicycling Thursday by forcing Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma to withdraw his proposal to eliminate dedicated funding for the Transportation Enhancements program.
Peopleforbikes.org supporters and our advocacy partners influenced this outcome by sending close to 50,000 emails and making thousands of phone calls to their U.S. Senators in just 48 hours. Thank you!
As a result, funding for all federal transportation programs has now been extended to March 31, 2012. The key, cost-effective programs that make bicycling safer and easier -- Transportation Enhancements, Safe Routes to School, and Recreational Trails -- will continue to receive modest, dedicated support -- about 1.5 percent of the total federal transportation investment.
Every U.S. Senate office received an unprecedented number of well-crafted emails and articulate phone calls this week from people who bike. This powerful show of support for bicycling made a strong impression on Congress and influenced the positive outcome.
We reminded the Senate that bicycling investments support a growing number of transportation trips coast to coast, and save government agencies money on road repairs, parking infrastructure costs, and health-care costs. They recognize that this is a small investment with a big payback that makes Americans safer.
A huge thanks to the thousands of Americans, our supporters, who rallied quickly to contact their elected officials on this challenge. We will continue to keep you posted on key issues and opportunities that affect the future of bicycling in the United States.
I hope you'll join me in taking a ride this weekend to celebrate!

Professional bike fittings this weekend
Bob Duncan and Cody Bohachek of Veritas Fit Systems will be in the store Saturday the 17th and Sunday the 18th of September, 2011 to provide professional bike fittings. Bob and company come very highly recommended by one of our friends who has been fit by Bob multiple times as his riding skills have improved. These fittings are above and beyond getting the right size frame for you, and will take into account many other facets of your riding style and position on the bike. A fitting will help fine tune any discomfort you may have and will help you maximize your efficiency on your rides. You will be fitted on your personal bicycle, so be prepared to bring it along for your appointment.
Sign up sheets are at the store, and the service costs $150, with a $75 deposit required to reserve a time slot. Appointments are in 1.5 hour increments starting at 8AM on Saturday. We suggest you allow for 2 hours at a minimum for your session.
Benefits of a professional fitting include:
Proper fit allows you to get maximum efficiency and comfort from your bicycle. This results in greater power output and performance.
Alleviate chronic cycling issues such as chronic pain in your back/neck/shoulders/wrists/knees/ankles/feet.
Greater overall comfort while riding. This means you'll get out and ride your bike more and that's our ultimate goal!
Get in and sign up before all the slots are filled for the weekend, we'd like to maximize our time with Bob and Cody.

Group Rides!
Our group rides are quite successful, even with the crazy heat wave that we all just experienced. In fact, the "A" Group, or Advanced Road Group has been so successful that we have increased the rides. We now have "A" Group rides on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Additionally, we still have the "B" Group, or Intermediate Road group on Tuesday evenings and at least once a month get the "C" Group, or Mountain Bike group together to hit the trails.
If you haven't done so yet, make sure you stop in one of these evenings and take part. As always, a helmet and tube or patch kit is required to participate. We look forward to seeing you over the remainder of the summer!

Results!
Last Saturday turned out to be a great day for racing! While the racing was close, the results took a while due to the contestants speeds..
The first group, ages 10 and under, were able to show those in the older age brackets a thing or two about taking your time..
(Left to right, Kane Moeller 1st place, Ben Laffin 2nd place, Andrew McNaughton 3rd place)
The second group, ages 11-17, weren't to be outdone and showed even more balance and control during the enduring race.
(Left to right, Baily VanTilburg 1st place, Abby McNaughton 2nd place, Cami Mohler 3rd place)
The third group, 18 and older, were all about racing and could have probably learned a little from the younger age groups. With talk like "rubbing is a part of racing" and cries for training wheels we knew the race supervisors were going to have their hands full. Once the rules of the race were re-explained and they understood that "rubbing" wasn't allowed during this race, everything turned out fine.
(Left to right, Dr. Geoff Froning 1st place, Dr. Dawn McNaughton 2nd place, Matt VanTilburg 3rd place)
We would like to thank all of you that participated and took the time out of your own busy schedules to take part or cheer on the contestants.

Information Update!..
With the warmer weather finally arriving a lot of you have been stopping in to get prepared for the cycling season. It has been great meeting all of you and helping to take care of all your cycling needs. Rich and I really enjoy sharing our passion about cycling with you.
This week will mark the beginning of our FREE Group Rides. The "B Group" will begin this Tuesday at 6:15PM with a nice ride out to the lake. This group ride is going to be geared more for those that are beginners or intermediate riders. Not sure what the exact route will be, but it should be a great time for all who participate.
We will also be starting the "A Group" rides on Thursday at 6:15PM. This is going to be for the more advanced riders and will have a quicker pace and longer distance than the B Group. I think this will be a great group for those looking at improving their group riding skills at higher cadences.
We haven't forgotten about you Offroad/Mountain bikers out there. We will be organizing some rides for you beginning in June. We figured that with the travel involved in getting to the good trails, it was worth the delay to make sure the experience was as enjoyable as possible for all that took part.
So if you are interested, make sure you contact us and get yourself signed up to ride. We will be glad to add you to our email list to keep you informed of all the ins and outs for the Group Rides. For safety purposes, we will be requiring all riders to wear a helmet and have either a replacement tube or patch kit for any flats that may happen during the ride.
One more bit of information for you as well. With the postponement of the "World's Slowest Bicycle Race" because of the weather, we have decided to reschedule it for this coming Saturday, May 28th. Make sure you sign up for your chance at the Title of BIKE HUB's Slowest Racer!..

Finishing Touches!!..
Well, things are getting close. We are working hard to finish the store as quickly as possible. We are working so hard in fact, Rich is cutting and installing trim in the fitting room as I type this latest post!.. The walls have been painted, with only doors and a few finishing touches needed to complete the painting. Our service counter is close to being finished and will give us the greatest ability to service bikes of all sorts with ease and efficiency. Computers are in and are being set up by our friend and computer guy Robb.
But that isn't even the best part of the story! We will be placing our Bontrager and Trek order tomorrow morning and should be expecting our initial order soon. With this news, the initial opening of the store can be expected shortly.
I am growing with anticipation for the opening and can't wait to show you why Trek and Bike Hub are the only combination needed for all of your cycling needs!

A Taste Of Things To Come!..
Well the new store location is coming along. We now have most of the walls painted, the center counter is built and the displays are coming together nicely. Designing and building a store is a serious undertaking, but all of us at Bike Hub feel that once you see the finished product you will be just as excited as we are!
I personally can't wait to open the doors and give the local community a high class cycling experience! Just to wet your whistle sort a speak, I will give you just a taste of what Bike Hub will have to offer. Bicycle sales and service are obviously going to be a part of the mix, but we are going to have much more for your cycling enjoyment. We are also going to be providing apparel and accessories to give you the one stop convenience you won't be able to find anywhere else in the area.
Additionally, for those of you that haven't been following my own personal weight loss blog, I will be helping those of you like myself that have struggled with weight management. I will share my own personal highs and lows and help you become more healthy and active in your own lives! It is my fervent hope that my own desire for better health along with my love for the outdoors and excitement about cycling will help others as much as I know it will help me in the months and years to come. I am looking forward to sharing my story and helping others to find their own path to fitness!
Well, there is your taste of what is to come. I don't want to give it all away, but I will leave you with one thing. The experience you will get with Bike Hub will be like nothing you have experienced before. Our love for nature and the outdoors, mixed with a passion for cycling and a healthy lifestyle is what we believe will make us your only place for all of your cycling needs!.. So make sure you stop in next month to see what makes us so excited about the new store! I look forward to talking with all of you face to face soon!..
